Peter Oosterhuis: Tiger Will Not Fit In With Ryder Cup Teammates
Tuesday September 7th 2010 | 11:00 am | Waggle Room
Despite protestations to the contrary this morning, the long held view of Tiger Woods & the Ryder Cup is they don't quite see eye-to-eye with each other. Woods has been criticized for not much caring about the team competition, the Euro road games, and pretty much any other aspect - social or professional - about it. This morning, Woods tried to again dissuade anyone from that speculation. "I've always loved playing The Ryder Cup. I've always enjoyed being a part of the team. I don't know where the perception of indifference is, because I've always loved it," Woods said. The team bonding that occurs, getting to know the guys and everyone there that's associated with our team are experiences that you'll never forget and I've created some great friendships because of it." Well, Peter Oosterhuis isn't so sure Woods will be much help to the team. Speaking with Sky Sports, the analyst seemed skeptical of Woods' team room presence. "You start reading about some of things that have happened with Tiger playing in the Ryder Cup before and he hasn't fitted in with the team very well at all," Oosterhuis said. "I have my doubts about how he will fit in on the team this year. "He should be leading the team and inspiring the team. They should be saying 'I've got Tiger on my Ryder Cup team, we're going to demolish the opposition,' and that hasn't happened." I have my doubts about Woods in this format, so I tend to back up Oosterhuis. It has been proven time and again that talent is not the determining factor in winning the Ryder Cup. It is proper chemistry. Woods, though, may have found the one person (and he only needs one) to bond with in the team format. Steve Stricker and he were a resounding American force last fall. Could that be enough to help Woods? [Read More] ![]() |

Luke Donald Explains His Barclays 28-40 & How Monty May Have Cost Him $10 Million
Tuesday September 7th 2010 | 10:00 am | Waggle Room
Remember that front nine 28 that probably landed Luke Donald a spot on the European Ryder Cup team? And then the 40 coming home that made half of the universe second guess what in the world they just saw? Well, the Englishman has a perfectly fine explanation. In his blog through sponsor Mizuno, Donald said he found out on the 10th hole that he had made the squad. "I found out after 10 holes on Sunday at the Barclays, though. I was going along nicely, out in 28, then I found out – and I went to pieces!," Donald said. Donald rebounded nicely this week in Boston, playing solid again and having the proper four rounds without disruption to showcase his talent. While Donald may be on the team, that 40 at Ridgewood may well have cost him a chance at the FedExCup. Let's just say Monty waits until the round is over, and then Donald finds out. Say he shoots even par coming in the house. Donald finishes solo 3rd at worst and is looking awfully sporty for the $10 million in Atlanta. He sits currently at fifth in the ranking, but could well be second or third had Monty not applied ice to his Cup chances. Players lodged in that top five control their own destiny in Atlanta, a spot in which Donald is assured. But, if Donald falls out of the top five due to a blip off the radar at Cog Hill, the Northwestern grad could well have a legit gripe against Monty. That in mind, Donald suggested a revision of the process that both forms the team and how it is named. "It’s a logical answer for the two captains to pick the teams at the same time, so there’s no advantage, perceived or not. "I don’t want to go on about the qualification system; we have to concentrate now on the guys who are in the team coming together to win. But I think maybe it needs a tweaking or two. I understand the European Tour want to protect their tour and encourage players to play in Europe as much as they can, but at the same time the top players shouldn’t be penalised for wanting to play against the strongest fields and better themselves. It doesn’t seem quite right when the number eight player in the world is not on the team." [Read More] ![]() |

Jim Gray Unveils 'I Called It!' Banner at NASDAQ Presser
Tuesday September 7th 2010 | 8:00 am | Waggle Room
While Corey Pavin was announcing his four captain's pick for the 2010 Ryder Cup team, Jim Gray held a quiet press conference at the nearby NASDAQ stock exchange to say, "I told you so!" to all who questioned his claim that Tiger Woods would make the Ryder Cup team. "It just feel so good, you know?," Gray said after unveiling a celebratory banner which will hang from his garage for the weeks leading into the exhibition at Celtic Manor. Gray reported in the days before the PGA Championship that Corey Pavin told him that Woods would certainly make the Ryder Cup team. Pavin disputed the claim the next day, including a rebuke to Waggle Room in the hours before his joint press conference with European captain Colin Montgomerie. After the press conference, Gray and Pavin nearly came to blows with a strong verbal argument. "I can safely say to Corey that he did, in fact, go down," Gray said in response to his own questions in a self-produced UStream special called The Retribution. First reading from a prepared statement, Gray - wearing a Nelson Muntz t-shirt - said, "Ha. Haha. Hahahahahahaha. Ha. Ha." [Read More] ![]() |

Woods, Cink, Johnson, and Fowler Round Out US Ryder Cup Team
Tuesday September 7th 2010 | 7:41 am | Waggle Room
At the New York Stock Exchange - the home to risk taking of epic proportions - on Tuesday morning, US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin made the four picks that would round out his team seeking to win the road game at Celtic Manor in a month's time. Pavin selected Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson, and rookie Rickie Fowler to make the team. These four join Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Matt Kuchar, Jeff Overton, Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, and Dustin Johnson - the eight automatic qualifiers that made the squad from the points list following the PGA Championship. Woods will be competing in the Ryder Cup for the sixth time following having to miss the exhibition in 2008 while recovering from surgery. His career record of 10-13-2 is not great, but Woods has a sure partner in Steve Stricker. The tandem cruised in last fall's Presidents Cup at Harding Park in a rout of the International squad. "It's great to be a part of this team. It's an honor to head over to Wales and play in the Ryder Cup," Woods said of his first Ryder Cup captain's selection via teleconference. He said he was not sure where the reputation that Woods cared not for the competition, adding he enjoys the team atmosphere and the bonding that happens with the squad. Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters champion, has a great putter - an important asset in match play formats. He will work well in the better ball format. His opening 63 at TPC Boston on Friday likely cemented his spot. Stewart Cink has been a stalwart of the American Ryder Cup team, though often by virtue of a captain's pick. Cink has been picked two prior times. It will be his fifth appearance on the team. He has a 4-7-4 career record in the event. Rickie Fowler rounds out the team, making his first appearance in the competition. Fowler did not have the full two years to qualify for the team, but still finished strongly on the points list in 20th place following the Deutsche Bank Championship. Fowler has made 16 of 21 cuts this season, including a couple of near misses at Phoenix and the Memorial. He beat out several contenders, including Charley Hoffman - Monday's winner in Boston, Bo Van Pelt - having his best season ever, and Anthony Kim - having played poorly in his return from thumb surgery. "It was awesome to be selected. I have to thank Corey for giving me the opportunity to go over [to Wales]. The last time I played overseas was in the Walker Cup, and I hope I can take what I learned there," said Fowler. "I felt really good about Rickie. He has an excellent [Walker Cup] record at 7-1," Pavin said of the Fowler selection. Corey Pavin appears pleased with his selections. "I'm very pleased to add these four players to our team. And I think they complement our eight players very well," said Pavin in his press conference. "There were a lot of people in the mix. We talked about it a lot last night - the three of us here, and talked to [vice-captain] Jeff Sluman. "We were done at a fairly early hour last night. ... There was a lot of thought put into [the choices]. I spoke to all of the members of the team...and simply made a choice," Pavin said. He said his opinions were not really formed until last weekend, a late decision favoring players with a hot hand. "I like the overall blend of the team. It gives me a lot of options. A lot of combinations will work." [Read More] ![]() |

Pavin's Picks: Woods, Johnson, Cink, and ...Fowler?
Tuesday September 7th 2010 | 6:35 am | Waggle Room
After Charley Hoffman took down the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday evening, there was brief speculation that he could slide into the fourth - and lone questioned - captain's pick for Corey Pavin. The prevailing sentiment, though, was that it was probably not good enough to oust either JB Holmes or Rickie Fowler from their perches. Holmes as a pivotal part of the '08 squad and Fowler having the endorsement of Phil Mickelson, Pavin had strong cases for each going into Boston. Perhaps we now know his choice based upon a Rickie Fowler tweet from moments ago. Feels nice to sleep in a bit...going to relax a little and then head to the course this afternoon for a little practiceless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhoneRickie FowlerRickieFowlerPGA Steve Sands of Golf Channel is reporting that Pavin will select Fowler and the aforementioned - and experienced - three to round out his team. The announcement is from the New York Stock Exchange at 10:30am ET. [Read More] ![]() |
